Clove — Syzygium aromaticum
Clove comes from an evergreen tree in the Myrtaceae family. What we recognise as a clove is actually the plant’s unopened flower bud, harvested before flowering and traditionally dried until it develops its familiar dark brown appearance.
Steam distillation of the buds produces an intensely aromatic essential oil dominated by eugenol, the naturally occurring aromatic compound responsible for much of Clove’s characteristic warm, spicy fragrance.
Beyond its familiar spice character, good Clove Bud oil reveals complexity of sweetness, warm woods and subtle balsamic nuances beneath its powerful opening.
In natural perfumery, tiny amounts can add richness and body to deep florals, particularly rose and ylang ylang.

The Ritual
Add sparingly to a diffuser blend when you want to create a warm, rich and spicy atmosphere.
For topical formulations, Clove Bud should always be used at a low dilution because of its high eugenol content and potential to irritate or sensitise the skin.
In botanical perfumery, begin with a trace rather than drops. Clove can quickly dominate, but at very low concentrations it adds extraordinary warmth and complexity.
