Peru Balsam Essential Oil

Balsamic · Vanilla · Warm

Myroxylon balsamum

Vacuum distilled from the aromatic resin of Myroxylon balsamum grown in Peru, Peru Balsam is a beautifully rich perfumery material with a deep, warm sweetness reminiscent of vanilla, benzoin and soft spice.

Its aroma is immediately enveloping, smooth and balsamic with a distinctive vanilla-like sweetness, subtle cinnamon warmth and a faint smoky undertone. As it settles, the fragrance becomes softer, rounder and increasingly resinous.

Peru Balsam is particularly treasured in botanical perfumery as a natural fixative, helping anchor more fleeting floral and citrus notes while adding warmth, sweetness and longevity to a composition.

A botanical of warmth, sweetness and lingering scent.

Botanical Notes

Peru Balsam — Myroxylon balsamum

Peru Balsam comes not from a flower or leaf, but from the aromatic resin of the Myroxylon tree.

The resin develops a remarkably complex fragrance, rich and balsamic with vanilla-like sweetness, gentle spice and subtle smoky nuances.

Although its scent is often compared with vanilla, Peru Balsam has its own distinctive character. It is deeper, more resinous and gently spiced, making it a beautiful botanical alternative when a composition calls for warmth and sweetness.

Its remarkable tenacity also makes it an important material in natural perfumery, where small amounts can help give a fragrance greater depth and persistence.

The Ritual

Add a small amount to a diffuser blend when you want to create a warm, enveloping atmosphere.

For topical use, Peru Balsam requires particular care and appropriate dilution due to its potential to cause skin sensitisation.

In botanical perfumery, begin with very small amounts. Its rich base note can soften sharper edges, deepen florals and help more volatile aromatic materials linger.

Try Peru Balsam + Mandarin + Sandalwood for something warm and softly sweet, or Peru Balsam + Rose + Patchouli for a deeper, velvety floral composition.
