LEMONGRASS ESSENTIAL OIL

Lemongrass Essential Oil

Citrus · Grassy · Herbaceous

Cymbopogon flexuosus

Steam distilled from the aromatic leaves of Lemongrass grown in Nepal, this intensely fragrant essential oil captures the brightness of citrus through an entirely different botanical.

Despite its unmistakable lemon-like fragrance, Lemongrass is not a citrus tree. It is a tall aromatic grass whose slender leaves release an extraordinarily fresh scent when crushed.

The aroma opens bright and penetrating, a vivid lemon with freshly cut grass and green herbs. As it settles, a delicate sweetness emerges, softening its sharper citrus character.

In botanical perfumery, Lemongrass brings radiance, green freshness and remarkable diffusion. A little goes a long way.

A botanical of tall grasses, crushed green leaves and brilliant citrus.

Botanical Notes

Lemongrass — Cymbopogon flexuosus

Lemongrass belongs to the Poaceae family — the same botanical family as Vetiver, although their aromas occupy very different parts of a fragrance.

The long aromatic leaves are steam distilled to produce an essential oil characterised by its powerful lemon-like, grassy and herbaceous fragrance.

Its citrus impression comes largely from naturally occurring aromatic constituents such as citral, rather than from citrus peel.

Botanical Profile

Botanical name: Cymbopogon flexuosus

Blends Beautifully With

Citrus: Bergamot · Grapefruit · Lemon · Lime · Orange
Herbs: Basil · Clary Sage · Lavender · Marjoram · Rosemary · Tea Tree
Florals: Geranium · Jasmine · Neroli · Palmarosa · Ylang Ylang

Earth & Forest: Patchouli · Pine · Juniper Berry
Fresh Botanicals: Citronella · Niaouli

Lemongrass is particularly useful when a blend needs brightness without relying solely on citrus peel oils. Its green, grassy quality also makes it beautiful against earthy Vetiver and dry woods.

The Ritual

Add a small amount to a diffuser to bring a vivid green-citrus fragrance into your space. Lemongrass is highly aromatic, so begin with fewer drops than you might use with a softer oil.

For topical formulations, always dilute appropriately before applying to the skin.

In botanical perfumery, use Lemongrass sparingly through the top and heart of a composition. Its intensity can easily dominate more delicate materials.

Try Lemongrass + Ginger + Vetiver for bright citrus-green notes moving through spice into earth.

Or Lemongrass + Bergamot + Cedarwood Atlas for something fresh, green and beautifully structured.

For a softer floral interpretation, Lemongrass + Geranium + Sandalwood would be lovely.

Safety

For external use only. Do not ingest or apply undiluted to the skin.

Lemongrass is a high-citral essential oil. Citral can cause skin irritation and sensitisation, particularly at higher concentrations.

Dilute appropriately. Avoid contact with eyes and sensitive areas. Keep out of reach of children. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from heat and direct sunlight.
