Cinnamon — Cinnamomum verum
True Cinnamon is an evergreen tree belonging to the Lauraceae family and has a long history of cultivation in Sri Lanka.
Its familiar spice comes from the tree’s aromatic inner bark. When the dried bark is steam distilled, it produces an intensely concentrated essential oil with a fragrance dominated by warm, sweet and spicy facets.
Beneath that immediate cinnamon character are dry woody and softly powdery notes, giving the oil considerably more complexity than its familiar culinary association might suggest.
Cinnamon Bark is particularly powerful in perfumery. It doesn’t require volume to make itself known, tiny quantities can introduce warmth throughout an entire composition.

Cinnamon Bark is especially beautiful as a trace material. Combined with citrus it creates warmth and radiance; with florals it introduces sensual spice; and with resins and woods it can become deep, rich and enveloping.
The Ritual
Use very sparingly in a diffuser, it’s strength means only a small amount is needed.
For topical formulations, Cinnamon Bark requires very low dilution because of its potential to irritate and sensitise the skin.
In botanical perfumery, start with a trace rather than a full drop wherever possible. It can completely change the warmth and diffusion of a fragrance at surprisingly low concentrations.
Try Cinnamon Bark + Cardamom + Mandarin for a beautifully luminous spice composition, or Cinnamon Bark + Peru Balsam + Sandalwood for something deeper, warmer and softly balsamic.
